Back to Simple QuestionsThe Holy Spirit

Plain Question

The Holy Spirit is not a mood, force or religious atmosphere.

Scripture speaks of the Spirit as personal, holy, divine, indwelling, teaching, helping, convicting and glorifying Christ.

The Spirit is personal

He teaches, speaks, helps, intercedes and can be grieved. He is not an impersonal current to be used.

The Spirit is holy

He does not lead people into flattering darkness. He sanctifies, convicts and bears holy fruit.

The Spirit glorifies Christ

The Spirit does not draw attention away from Jesus. He bears witness to the Son.

Discernment matters

Spiritual language can become vague very quickly. People may call every strong feeling, every inner impulse or every mystical experience "the Spirit." Scripture gives a better test.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth. He does not contradict Christ, Scripture or holiness. He convicts the world of sin, righteousness and judgment. He helps believers pray. He produces fruit that looks like the character of Christ, not spiritual self-display.

The Spirit is not given so we can replace obedience with impressions. He is given so we may belong to Christ and walk in truth.

Scriptural Anchors

These passages anchor the Spirit's personhood, deity, indwelling, help, truth and fruit.

John 14:16-17

The Spirit is the Comforter and Spirit of truth.

John 16:13-14

The Spirit guides into truth and glorifies Christ.

Acts 5:3-4

Lying to the Holy Spirit is lying to God.

Romans 8:26

The Spirit helps our infirmities and intercedes.

1 Corinthians 2:10-11

Galatians 5:22-23

Ephesians 4:30

Why this matters now

In an age of spiritual confusion, not every inner voice is wisdom. Not every supernatural-sounding claim is from God. The Spirit of truth does not flatter error or blend Christ with idols.

He leads us to Christ, forms holiness in us and teaches us to cry to God in dependence rather than spiritual pride.
