Back to Simple QuestionsAttributes of God

Plain Question

God is not whatever we need Him to be.

The living God reveals Himself. We do not invent His attributes from our wishes. Scripture teaches us to confess His holiness, mercy, justice, wisdom, love and unchanging life.

God is holy

God is not merely bigger than us. He is morally pure, set apart and worthy of reverent fear.

God is merciful and just

Mercy is not God forgetting justice. Justice is not God forgetting mercy. Scripture holds both together.

God is unchanging

He does not become more faithful tomorrow than He is today. His promises stand because His character stands.

Attributes keep worship honest

If we say "God" but mean only a helpful force, a private feeling or a vague kindness in the sky, we have not yet listened carefully. The God of Scripture is living, holy, personal, sovereign, merciful, righteous, patient, truthful and wise.

That is not an abstract list for scholars. It is the difference between worshiping God and worshiping a projection of ourselves.

God's attributes comfort us because they are true. His mercy comforts sinners. His holiness humbles us. His justice tells victims that evil is not invisible. His love tells the trembling soul that God is not cold power. His immutability tells us that His covenant faithfulness is not a passing mood.

God is not reduced by His attributes. He is revealed through them.

Scriptural Anchors

These passages keep the attributes of God grounded in His own revelation.

God reveals mercy, patience, truth and justice together.

Deuteronomy 6:4

The Lord is one.

Psalms 90:2

God is eternal, before mountains and worlds.

Isaiah 57:15

God is high and holy, yet near to the contrite.

Malachi 3:6

God does not change.

1 John 4:8

God is love, not merely loving sometimes.

Romans 11:33

God's wisdom and judgments outrun our measuring tape.

Why this matters for The Signal

An evidence map can ask whether God is real. Scripture teaches us who the real God is. Those questions belong together, but they are not identical.

The Signal should never leave a person with a thin "higher power" when Scripture reveals the living Lord. Coherence may clear the road. Revelation names the One who stands at the end of it.
